When we look around at the general health in the Western world we see alarming rates of diseases in our society that never used to exist. With clever mass marketing and inventive packaging, the corporate food giants are making in roads to our most precious asset, our health.A raising of awareness and education programs are getting a small percentage to start looking at alternatives, many of them with the Paleolithic diet.
The health problems we see all pervasive in todays society, cancer, osteoporosis, diabetes Type 2, high blood pressure, heart disease and of course the ever increasing problem of obesity, are a consequence of the human diet changing in the space of the last 10,000 plus years with the dawn of agriculture. Genetically, natural selection had too little time to adapt. After the Paleolithic period ended, we as humans began to consume several foods that we never had previously during our evolution in the paleolithic period. These foods became the basis of our diet with the dawning of agriculture. Animal domestication started to see us consume large amounts of cereals, beans, salt, dairy and alcohol. With the advent of the Industrial Revolution in the late 18th century and early 19th century, mechanised food processing and concentrated livestock farming practices were developed on a large scale. These led to fattier domestic meats, refined sugars, cereals and vegetable oils which are heavily impacting on our long term health.
In the U.S., cereals, refined sugars, dairy products, refined vegetable oils and alcohol account to more than 70% of the total daily energy consumed, which many supporters of the paleolithic diet assert is why we are in the massive health crisis we are, especially the Western populations. Convenience really does seem to be a double edged sword and it looks as though we are paying a higher price than we initially realised! These advocates of the paleo diet, as it has come to be known, contend that since the start of the agricultural age on through the industrial age and into the information age, the introduction of domesticated and processed plant foods i.e. cereal grains and legumes etc. has impacted on our bodys absorbtion of many key nutrients. Antinutrients are known to be found in high amounts in the same legumes and cereals.
Now this is only one persons opinion on the virtues of a paleo diet, yet we don`t need to look too far to see the evidence of an unhealthy society and the fact that something needs to change and fast.It is all up to the individual to raise his or her awareness. Just take a look around you...
